Hi All, My Hard Drive Crashed. Presently using my girlfriends computer!
Here is What I have Done:
I installed a New harddrive Installed win98 as I NEED This operating system. DON'T ASK WHY, I just do.
I updated my Explorer to version 6. (That is what I had Previously and it worked perfectly) (Explorer 7 Won't work with Win98)
Finally I got on the Internet, But All pages are a MILE LONG. The Curser on the right side must go 10,000 pages down. Doesn't matter What website I go to.
In Hotmail, I can't click on anything. As soon as I try, it Disappears from the screen.
MORE INFO: Firing up my computer, My Menu Page is OK I Installed FTP Explorer that allows me to upload to my website, It is also OK.
So it Seems as its related to "Internet Explorer 6". But I previously installed this before from the SAME CD on the Previous Harddrive and No Problem.
ANY HELP or Guess's APPRECIATED.
IF I Can't get Up and running SOON, I will be forced to Shut down This Fourm and also my Website.
Gary

Maybe some system files are damaged. Since win98 is very buggy thing , it's better (and easier) to reinstall entire system. Make a full chek of hard drive and cd contents, or better make a copy of this cd onto hard drive , boot from any other dos disk and install.

Gary. Sorry to hear about your windows ( crap) problem. Are you installing ei6 off a old cd or off their web site? Have you tried firefox instead of ei6 ? Did you go to windows for any updates? ( bad Idea maybe) Did you format your hard drive as fat 16 or 32? What worked before? Do you have a boot floppy that can format your new hard drive with their own version of format? Have you tried it? (long shot , leave for last) Have you run msconfig and shut down any crap that could be running in back ground? I have not used win98 in such a long time. Let me know how it is going...Keith

No Crap running in background. I have Formatted many hard drives and I have Proper Win98 Install disks. None of that should be a Problem. Gary

Update: Reinstalled Windows. Now I can get onto the Internet, But CAN'T Access Hotmail. It says there is an Error. MORE CRAP. Think I'm going to QUIT all this! SORRY.

What exactly does the error statement say? Win98 has been around for a long time. It has had many updates. Explorer 6 also had many updates. Your original version of Explorer 6 probably has versions of files that are too old for the present version of Hotmail, which was designed for Win Xp and Vista. One suggestion I can make that worked for me. With the computer running-- go start/system info/tools/ Internet Explorer repair. I'm not at my Win98 computer, so I'm not exactly sure of the path. But I found Win98 Explorer repair works pretty good to repair flaws. rmeyn

After Numerous attempts to get the computer going, I give up.
Unfortunately a New computer would need to be a Dual Boot system, with win98 and ? (XP Maybe) as I Must have Dos available. It would Probably cost around $1000.00
I Very Much Enjoy What I do, But the Problem is I am Tooo CHEAP to spend that amount of money, to just keep a Non-Profit website going.
Talking to a person on the phone, they said there was another system that was being offered for free, and they said they would mail it to me. But I can't remember Who and it hasn't arrived yet. "Maybe it will show up and save the day".

Hotmail uses AJAx interface and it is badly suitable for any browsers exept newer versions of explorer, especially on slow connections, because it needs to load all those scripts and cache it on your system drive before working properly. It's about couple megs size ( Gmail offers special interface for slow connections, hotmail is not. So maybe a good choice for you will be just installing another browser like Firefox 1.0-2.0, this is most like explorer, but faster and should work. Personally i'm using Opera , it's fast and reliable and saves bandwidth by disabling images you don't need. But it also has problems with hotmail , because it's not officially supported. Another way is istalling firewall (like atguard) and traffic compression software (example toonel.net) to increase your connection performance. Or just WAIT until it loads first time. Before doing so, delete all explorer cache, then while opening hotmail page press ctrl+shift+f5 to reload it completely. Actually you can reload with just pressing those keys, but it's not always reliable due to micro$oft bugs and errors.
I can advice many other things (system administration and pc repair is my job), but i think it's the most simple way in your case.

I run Hotmail on my WIN98 system at work and it works fine... even on a dialup service. I used the scaled down version that Microsoft suggests. It's one thing to re-install WIN98 on a drive that already had it, and quite another thing to install WIN98 on a new system and make it work in today's environment. It can be done, if you want to stay with Microsoft, but it's going to take patience. rmeyn

Gary, Have you installed the latest service pack for IE 6.0? It's at: support.microsoft.com/kb/328548This will install all updates and fixes for IE 6.0. Be sure to use the correct version: Explorer 6 SP1 rmeyn

i don't think this could help. i have always used a pirate win98 without any updates and it worked well. i've used it till 2002, even after XP was released.

About 3 months ago my Win98 operating system crashed. Got all sorts of wierd problems. I could not even use Google Search Taskbar! I checked for corrupt windows files and fixed them. Still no luck. I re installed WIN98 and it worked better. I downloaded the latest Service Pack for Explorer 6.0 and now everything works well. rmeyn

Yes, explorer service pack may be critical today, for web 2.0 applications, but this should not affect everything like it was described by Gary. This can help with hotmail of course, but better choice will be total replacing explorer with something else. This service pack weight is claimed to be up to 70mb, while firefox 3.0 is only 7mb.

If that is the case, On a 56K Modem, It would take Forever to download 70 Mb.
Last Night I Remembered Who I talked with on the phone and I called him. He says he will Snail Mail me this Other Software. Can't remember what the System was But it Included Firefox.
Keep your Fingers Crossed.
