If your win98 is not a pirate then I think the explorer update is what you need. I seem to remember needing it in my win98 days. Good Luck.

If your win98 is not a pirate then I think the explorer update is what you need. I seem to remember needing it in my win98 days. Good Luck. My computer was "Wipe Disk" and "re-formated", than win98 installed (Yes a Registered version), as well as IE-6 installed from a CD as dial-up internet is too slow. (Win98 can Only update to IE6 Maximum.) But as soon as I went to Hotmail, it Screwed up my hard drive. I tried this Several Times, Same Results. So I have Re-done it all AGAIN, with win98 on that computer and I can go ANYWHERE, EXCEPT to Hotmail. No problem. Presently I use my Girlfriends computer to Access my Hotmail account. I also have an old 486 computer running on Dos 5, which I still need for some programs. And another computer that I I have installed Ubunto on, and it seems OK. Ubfortunately with 3 computers, three monitors and 3 printers already, I don't have room for that forth one on my bench. MY PLAN is, After I solve my Medical Problem: is to buy a New Computer. (The Cost is just Under $1000.00) It will have 3 Removeable harddrives and 3 seperate operating systems, (Probably Vista or XP, plus Win98 and Dos5) so I can boot from whichever I want. This will also allow me to create Backups of my Important Data onto any or all three drives, IF NEED BE. I Already use this backup system, on my present computer. Its just using a SIMPLE Dos "Batch File" that I created. It works Fantastic. With one click of the mouse: Presently It Copies all files (in specified directories) that are on my "C" drive, "that are NEWER DATES", to appropriate designated Directories in my "D" Drive. Sounds like a pretty good setup to me. I believe that microsoft will not let you on to hotmail as they dont have to support win98 anymore and maybe you will buy a newer OS. I know you realise how far they will go to sell another Win OS.
Keep DOS'ing.

I forgot to say that there is a Int Expl 6 service pack 1 that you may need. Worth a try. I have it on an old cd somewhere I think.

You know I just don't understand. I run Win 98 on my business computer and it accesses hotmail just fine. I use it everyday. The only glitch I have on that system is with Google Search. If I use Google Search , on occasion it crashes. MSN search works well. I had to download all service packs and re install WIn98 a couple of times over the last 3 or 4 years to keep it working. My home computer uses WIN XP and it works great. The only problem I've had is with certain Java based applications. Go figure. rmeyn

The real problem here is that later Java versions are simply not compatible with some older systems, so that means Win 98 may have problems running Java 1.5 or 1.6 (though I have seen version 1.3.1 run on a 486 under Win 95). As programs evolve they are not supporting such old Operating Systems. Only a slight change in a program may not suit the OS you are using. OSs of win 95 and win98 were considered outdated in multiples of months, not years. Use google and type in your query as if you were asking a person, like: I have win98 problem with Java.

Gary did you try in doing a virtual computer? with software like VIRTUAL PC. Having the windows xp as principally and you can add any other operating system, as LINUX, win95 or solaris, all in the same computer.
"A bit late my commentary, sorry"
