Hello,
I need to wind about 163 (120+43) turns of 0.3mm copper wire around a short 4.9 cm ferrite rod (it's for a small metal detector)
I suspect that there will be too many turns in the coil to wind it in one layer, so I'll presume that I'll have to wind it in layers. But I was wondering how this should be done precisely; as I understand it, the windings should be in one direction, but I guess it is "not done" to start winding a coil, say, from left to right, and then, at a certain point, continue winding from right to left.
Is the solution to this problem that I should begin winding a first layer (for example from left to right) and at a certain point return to the beginning of the rod and start winding a second layer, also from left to right?
In other words, say I have to wind a coil of 30 windings, but I only have room for 10 on the rod, and have to wind 3 layers of 10 windings each, does winding nr. 11 have to be above winding nr. 1 and winding nr. 21 above winding nr. 11?
I thank you in advance for your help. Reply With Quote

(Just wind it in a Bundle, not neat layers.) Also, it doesn't matter of you wind both coils in the Same Direction. What matters is that if it doesn't work when you wire it to the circuit, Just Reverse the wire connections on One Coil and it will correct it. PS: The Circuit works OK, as claimed, but I'm not very impressed. I can Pinpoint just as good with my PI Detectors using an 8 inch coil and with much greater distance of detection. Gary

Thanks a lot for the reply!
I'm actually making the Velleman kit k7201...
Would it harm the project to wind the coils in layers as described (winding nr. 11 above winding nr. 1, etc.)?

Sorry, No Comment as I haven't seen that kit or schematic of it.

If you look at the Picture of the Assembled detector, It IS a SCRAMBLE WOUND Coil. I would recommend you make it that way. If you LAYER Wind your coil, It will have a Higher Inductance, and MAY Not Work as good. Gary

Thank you very much for your valuable advice!
P.S.: I would like to congratulate you with your webpages describing how to build a PI Metal Detector. It is the ONLY website I know up to this date that features such accessible and complete instructions on building a PI detector...I am currently collecting all the necessary parts to build the single coil design...

good day to you sir, I'm WONDROUS Silva, 24 yrs. old, from Philippine, actually this is just my first time to join a forum.,i really appreciate to this site. i've got an interest to join to this forum becausE for Somethng that i want to know more about in making a metal detector.coz im alSo love to find treasUres.its really hard to find treaSUreS w/o sOme equipments to usE., my firsT problem Sir that encountered is on how to make a coil, i mean to install or to roll it., thank you very much sir.,more power'

how to built search coil transmiter and receiver coil with feedback wide26cm frequence*6.5khz * I think you need a MUCH BETTER Explaination of what you want. Search Coil for What? Why 6.5Khz? (An Audio Freq.?) 26cm? Doesn't make any sence to me.
