Hello. I am not an expert, so I have a question (for participation). Question is about the power supply in "color organ in home" that is based on zener diode. Usually resistor is placed in series with load before the zener diode, but I see only D1 and C17 instead of a resistor. Can anyone explain how it works? Also for what purpose C14 C15 C16 are used in the circuit? Does polarity matters in tantalum capacitors? How to distinguish tantalum and regular capacitors? Can I use regular capacitors instead of tantalum? Thanks a lot.  |

Can I use regular capacitors instead of tantalum? Thanks a lot. C17 Acts as a "Capacitive Reactance". At 60 Hz and .47uF, it has a reactance (Effective Resistance) of 5,644 Ohms, so at 115 volts, it passes about 20 mA and No heating problems like a resistor. C9, C10 and C13, as well as there associated Diodes create Voltage Doublers. R5 & C14 R9 & C15 R13 & C16 The capacitors here, All perform a Filter to give a better DC voltage to the gate of the SCR. The resistors just loads the circuit so to not maintain that dc voltage for a long period and better follow the varying incoming signal. Tantalums are usually a "Tear Drop Shape". Tantalums Have a Polarity. And Unlike Electrolyte capacitiors, the Line on Tantalums is POSITIVE, (Not Negative like electrolytics.) ** What IODIOT Decided That, I'd like to know! Tantalums Caps have a Much Lower ESR than Electrolytics. (Effective Series Resistance) "Also a Much Lower internal current Leakage". Yes Regular Electrolytics will Work, But Tantalums are Better. Thank you. That really helps. I plan to make audio transformer from the small transformer I found in cellphone charger. What is the least amount of windings do I have to make? I have tried to make one already but the ratio of voltages on both windings was not constant  |

Either But one from "Goldmine as Rmeyn Said", Although I'm not sure if its Suitable. Or get the PROPER One from Me! |

I would buy it from you, but I need it really really soon.
I was looking at other non expensive transformers, but they have cutoff frequency at about 300Hz, which is I guess not good.

I have found one transformer on the dial-up modem, but wasn't able to find any data on it. Should I try it?

But IF your driving this color organ from your Speakers, it could produce: "too great of a load and cause damage to your amplifier". If I were to Mail you out the transformer I recommend, it would take about 8 days to get to you. (Transformer is $3.00. Shipping cost is $4.00.)
