As far as the amperage of the alternator you are kinda stuck with what you have. There is no easy way to change the windings of the stator to accommodate output amperage change.
You could change the zener to a lower voltage so it would not try to charge so hard i guess. Say 49 volts or 49.5 volts charge output.
Just an thaught.

I think that would confuse the regulation circuit that you want not to mention create a non regulated output from your alternator.

The author says, when you turn on the switch, it feeds some additional field current, which always increases the alternator's output voltage somewhat, so that the already hesitant regulator senses what it considers as a full battery and reduces it field wire output to nothing. Maybe that only works for a certain type of older regulator, because it's an old book and it looks too simple. It would be an experiment, with a low probability of success.
Thanks for your help. Ultimately, I want to build in a specific voltage and have the option to derate the maximum output current at the flick of a switch. Does anyone know of another build your own solution, that can do that?
