Hi Thanks to Gary I built your fencer circuit All works well I put a diode across the supply line and earth then fused at 3amp . found its works at its best as Garry wired with case of coil to ground. Quote me if I'm wrong but with my calculations the assembly should run for about 3-4 months on a single charge of a car battery. Anyways thanks again Garry.

Probably, But I would suggest a Trickle Charger on the Battery. Or a small Solar Panal would be good. Even with only a 100 to 250 ma rating If a car battery falls below 10.5 Volts for a period of time, it can get Permentally Damaged.

Thanks for the tip there Gary I never thought of that Im trying to deside what else to build out of your projects. Have you ever considered designing a induction balance metal detector?

IB Metal Detectors are BETTER When Built using Microprocessors. Not that I actually consider them as better! But either way, I ONLY do ANALOGUE Designs.

From a farm boy if you place salt (softener) around the ground rod it will keep the area wet in dry times, it will over a long time corrode the rod and I say Loooooooong time. The other thing to keep in mind is the length of wire this charger will handle. I always use a weed chopper which is more then enough to bite a cow or long haired critter. I use this in the dog enclosure with one wire high on a stand off and one wire low on a stand off and it will put a Lab on the ground one time (they learn) My father who raises Border Collies has some sort of fencer that is continually hot and made for dogs darn does it bite. A friend of mine uses a transformer from a flouresent light with a spark plug inline other wise it burns out the transformer and wow it will put a goat on it's side a kickin.

I am in the process of building this project and I was wondering what type of capacitors you used. The ones you have in the picture are kind of rectangle and I can't find anything like that at the local radio shack.
Thanks, Kevin

It would be a LOT Cheaper than Radio Shack! (I Use Polyester or Mylar Caps.)

Sorry, I'm fairly new to the site, didn't realize that you sold kits.
Unfortunatly I already bought a bunch of the stuff at the shack.

I sell PCB's and Kits for Most of my Projects and other than the PCB and special made Coils, All my parts are sold at my Actual landed Cost. Typically The Fencer Kits + PCB, are presently between $16 and $20 Including the Shipping Cost. (Just depends on Where you live.)

Gary,
I got it working this weekend, I tried a few different sized caps for the one that you give a range of .01uF to 1uF. I found with the 1uF I got the best arc, I was able to get a nice strong 1/8" - 3/16" arc. If I were to switch out that cap with something bigger like a 10 uF or 100uF with the circuit handle that or would I have to worry about something burning up?
I'm using the arc to light a proane torch so the bigger / stronger the arch the better.

That coil Looks like it is made for an Electronic Ignition system. The Fencer works properly for the Older Style Coils that are for Points and Condensor. SEE ATTACHED PICTURE for Correct type of Coil.Is the LED on the PCB Flashing OK?? IF SO, I would assume it is JUST THE COIL being a Problem. Attachments:

Yeah, that coil is what is used on late 90s to mid 00s GM 2.2L and several other engines. I have a few of the old coils also, and it works fine with that style. I was just hoping to be able to use the other kind.
What LED? I don't see one in the diagram or pictures?
Any thoughts on using a bigger Cap to get more arc? Any interest in helping me come up with a driver to run the other type of coil?
